As part of the USDA Forest Service New Hampshire appropriation for the 1998 Ice
Storm Recovery Program, the NH Arborists Association (NHAA) received a $50,000.00 grant. The NHAA Executive Board allocated
$15,000.00 of that grant to establish a core collection of resource materials for New Hampshire Arborists to be permanently
housed at the New Hampshire State Library in Concord, NH. Mary Reynolds chaired the NHAA State Library Project, seeking input
from several Association members to bring the project to fruition.
More than 145 books, CD
ROMS, slide sets, video sets, and other publications and AV equipment were selected, acquired, and delivered to the New Hampshire
State Library to efficiently support a cutting-edge core collection for the New Hampshire arborists. The primary focus of
the core collection selections corresponded to the subject areas developed for study and preparation for the NHAA Certification
Exam and include: tree identification; insect and disease identification and life cycles; tree biology and function; general
practices and procedures of arboriculture; soil structure; and safety.
The New Hampshire
State Library with authorization from the Governor & Council accepted this gift of a core collection for the State of
New Hampshire through a Memorandum of Understanding in 2001. All materials purchased under this project shall become the property
of the New Hampshire State Library. All materials shall be catalogued according to New Hampshire State Library Standards and
will be part of the New Hampshire Union Catalog. The general public who is not directly involved in the NH Arborists Association
may use all materials purchased under this agreement.
The New Hampshire State Library
will house and provide access to the materials purchased under this agreement. Two copies of each title have been made available.
One copy will be in the Reference Collection and will not circulate. A second copy will be a circulating copy. The AV equipment
will not circulate.
Upon completion of cataloguing all materials by the New Hampshire
State Library staff, a comprehensive list of all resources will be made available to the NH Arborists Association membership
and others statewide. At that time the NH Arborists Association and the New Hampshire State Library will jointly publicize
its core collection of arborists resources established at the New Hampshire State Library.
The NH Arborists Association's gift of a core collection of arboricultural resource materials to the New Hampshire State
Library is a dramatic one which attests to the Association's commitment and dedication to education: education of
professional arborists, the public, and new generations of arborists. There are few more satisfying or more far-reaching legacies
than education.
